How Do You Feed a Desert City of 3 Million People?
It’s one of the most fascinating questions in the world — and the UAE is one of the most fascinating places to answer it. With less than 1% arable land and extreme heat, the Emirates has had to pioneer some of the most innovative food production and sustainability strategies on the planet.
This field trip takes students behind the scenes of that challenge: to working farms, urban growing projects, and sustainability hubs that are quietly reshaping how cities feed themselves.
WHAT STUDENTS WILL EXPERIENCE
- Visit to a UAE urban or peri-urban farm (hydroponics, vertical farming, or traditional date farming depending on availability)
- Hands-on interaction with growing systems, soil science, and water conservation technology
- Guide-led discussion on UAE food security: where food comes from, how climate affects agriculture, and what the future looks like
- Introduction to UAE’s National Food Security Strategy and the role of innovation
- Student observation activities: data collection, plant identification, water usage calculations
- Post-tour reflection activity linking the experience to global sustainability goals (UN SDGs)
